Art and the Unconscious

The Renaissance focused on photo realism but by the opening of the 20th century the unconscious came into play. The conversation supported by the new discoveries of psychology influenced many artists to find a suitable expression for this unseen layer. Artists such as Duchamp, Picasso Dali and the Dadaists changed the cultural landscape with revolt. The abstract-expressionist began a more creative exploration of the inner world. Works like that of Rothko, Pollock, and others explored the inner layers of the human psyche giving us a glimpse into the soul of man. This was the new journey but where do we go from there?
